CONTRIBUTION OF TISSUE CULTURE TECHNIQUES TO HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION

Authors:   P.C. Debergh, L.J. Maene
Abstract:
The contribution of tissue culture to horticulture started with orchids, but it received its main impact in the field of ornamental greenhouse plants. Fruitculture was the next step. Palms and conifers are more recalcitrant but even there promising results are obtained now.

The increasing number of laboratories which are producing plants by tissue culture on commercial scale is an indication of the impact of this techniques in practical horticulture.

The two main fields of application are in sanitation and in propagation. The scheme for propagation have evolved and this results in cheaper quality products. Other fields where tissue culture has or can contribute to horticulture are : the obtention of novelties (embryo-culture, mutation breeding, somatic selection), gene banking, exchange programs.
