ISHS Acta Horticulturae 130: XII International Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases

THE DEGREE OF SENSITIVITY OF SOME PLUM CULTIVARS AND HYBRIDS TO SHARKA (PLUM POX) VIRUS DISEASE

Author:   M. Rankovic
Abstract:
The sensitivity of 14 plum cultivars and 3 promising plum hybrids to sharka has been tested under open field conditions. On the basis of the symptom intensity evaluation of the fruits, and check on the virus presence in the symptomless cultivars, all the cultivars tested have been divided into three groups:

Highly sensitive: Giant Prune, Hybrid II/II/80/59, Purple Pershore, Shropshire Damson and probably Marjorie's Seedling and Severn Cross.

Sensitive: Ariel, Cambridge Gage, Cacanska Rodna, Cacanski Šecer, Hybrid I/III/13 and Rivers' Early Prolific.

Tolerant: Cacanska Lepotica, Cacanska Najbolja, Hybrid I/6/62 and Oullin's Gage.

Among the tolerant cultivars, Cacanska Najbolja, Hybrid I/6/62 and Opal are distinguished by a certain degree of resistance. The testing of a larger number of samples by the ELISA technique has shown the localized distribution of the virus in them. The mentioned tolerant cultivars are recommended for successful growing in severely contaminated areas.
