INDEXING AND INCREASE METHOD OF "CLEAN" TRUE - TO - TYPE APPLE AND PEAR STOCK

Authors:   Z. Gatin, A. Saric
Abstract:
Our method for the production of budwood has been developed over the past six years (1976 – 1982). During that time, many improvements have been introduced which have led less expensive, faster and better techniques. We now have a system which ensures the production of commercial volumes of healthy true-to-type nursery stock of standard cultivars as well as the quick introduction of new cultivars on an industrial scale.

Source trees are kept under rigid control in a small foundation block (5 – 10 trees cultivar). Each tree is indexed every 3 – 5 years.

Pomological and economic observations are carried out in a evaluation block, which was established at the same time as the foundation block. The buds used to produce trees for the two blocks were taken from the same budsticks.

Due to the increase method used, this system is very flexible and allows us to react quickly to changes in the demand from commercial nurseries. For newly-introduced cultivars, a period of three years is required to develop increase blocks and to start to produce 1 – 3 million selected buds per cultivar a year, for commercial propagation.

The indexing and increase methods used are presented in the drawing.
