OCCURRENCE OF VIRUSES IN RUBUS CULTIVARS AND SPECIES IN AUSTRALIA

Authors:   G.L. Guy, P.Y. Sampson, J. McGechan, R. Stace-Smith
Abstract:
A survey of the viruses occurring in Rubus cultivars and species in Australia has revealed the presence of two pollen-borne viruses, tobacco streak and raspberry bushy dwarf; three aphid-borne viruses, raspberry leaf mottle, raspberry leaf spot and black raspberry necrosis; and a mycoplasma-like organism.

The survey covered field-grown commercial cultivars, recently imported cultivars still retained in plant quarantine stations, Rubus material proclaimed as noxious weeds and native Rubus species. No viruses were detected in "virus tested" cultivars imported from overseas sources, in native species or in introduced Rubus species proclaimed as noxious weeds.

Australia's isolation and apparent freedom from major virus vectors would indicate that of the Rubus viruses described overseas only the pollen-borne viruses, tobacco streak and raspberry bushy dwarf, represent a potentially serious problem.
