ISHS Acta Horticulturae 129: III International Symposium on Small Fruit Virus Diseases

FOREWORD

Author:   R. Stace-Smith
Abstract:
The papers included in this proceedings were presented at the Third International Symposium on Small Fruit Virus Diseases, held at Vancouver, British Columbia, June 16–18, 1982. The symposium was held under the auspices of the Commission for Plant Protection of the International Society for Horticultural Science. It was organized by the Working Group on Virus Diseases of Small Fruits. The two previous symposia were held in Heidelberg, Germany in 1976 and Budapest, Hungary in 1979 and the proceedings published as Acta Horticulturae Numbers 66 and 95 respectively. In keeping with the organizational pattern of the two previous symposia, this one was held at the same location and immediately before the International Symposium on Fruit Tree Virus Diseases.

The symposium had 45 registered delegates. The largest contingent of delegates came from the United States but, in all respects, the symposium was truly international. In addition to United States and Canada, delegates came from Australia, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Israel, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, United Kingdom, South Africa and West Germany.

Seventeen papers were presented at the paper reading sessions and these are included in full or in the form of an abstract in this proceedings. What is not included in the official proceedings is a summary of the many excellent discussions and observations on virus problems that were made during the sessions and field trips. These are an important aspect of the information exchange that occurs during such a symposium and, although unrecorded, they considerably enhance the value of this symposium.
