ISHS Acta Horticulturae 128: II International Symposium on Artificial Light in Horticulture

ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING OF CHRYSANTHEMUM STOCK PLANTS FOR WINTER PRODUCTION IN ICELAND

Authors:   M. Agustsson, A.E. Canham
Abstract:
Geothermal resources in Iceland for greenhouse heating are practically unlimited, but so far only about 15 ha are in production. Lack of natural light during winter hampers full utilization of the greenhouses. Experiments carried out by the Icelandic Agricultural Research Institute and the State Horticultural School during 1975–9 have shown that it is possible to maintain full production of chrysanthemum cuttings throughout the winter from artificially illuminated stock plants. A range of light flux densities was used from a number of different light sources and the paper describes the experiments and presents results obtained from the last three winters of experimentation.
