ISHS Acta Horticulturae 128: II International Symposium on Artificial Light in Horticulture

PROPAGATION OF SAINTPAULIA IONANTHA UNDER ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING

Authors:   R. Schneider-Moldrickx, S. Amberger
Abstract:
The influence of light quality and light intensity (quantum flux density) during culture of stock plants and cuttings on the formation of adventitious shoots was investigated in two trials. Six clones (Rhapsodie-, Optimara-, Diana- and Ballet-Types) were cultivated under following fluorescent lamps: Verilux TruBloom, Gro-Lux, Fluora 77, Cool White 20, Natura 36, Interna 39, Warm White 30, Warm White de Luxe 32. Light intensities between 32 and 72 μ E m-2s-1 were tested.

Light treatments of stock plants as well as treatments of cuttings resulted in significant differences in the number and fresh weight of regenerated shoots. When treating stock plants light quality was more effective than light intensity in improving the propagation rate. In contrast, during culture of cuttings higher light intensities stimulated the development of adventitious shoots. An influence of light quality could be demonstrated. In this experiment, Fluora 77, Gro-Lux, and Verilux TruBloom were inferior to the other types of lamps investigated.
