HIGH INTENSITY LIGHTING AND REFLECTIVE THERMAL BLANKET COMBINATION FOR ECONOMY OF ENERGY

Authors:   J.W. White, W.J. Sherry
Abstract:
The combination of a reflective thermal blanket and high pressure sodium vapor lamps maintained a 15°C temperature difference between crop zone and external to a glass greenhouse with no other heat source. When the lamps were on and the temperature difference was less than 12°C, some means of redistributing excess heat was necessary.

Temperatures in the attic above the thermal blanket and lamps and net radiation measurements just above the ridge outside the greenhouse provided evidence for recommending a thicker thermal blanket to contain more of the heat radiated by the lamps and ballasts. Reflectivity characteristics of various thermal blankets are reported.
