ISHS Acta Horticulturae 128: II International Symposium on Artificial Light in Horticulture

INTERACTION OF LAMP TYPES AND IRRADIANCE ON THE GROWTH OF TOMATO PLANTS

Author:   S.O. Grimstad
Abstract:
Young tomato plants were subjected to various lamp types and irradiance levels at different natural light conditions in the winter. Influorescent, high pressure mercury halide, and high pressure sodium lamps were compared. Best growth was obtained with warm white fluorescent light and poorest growth with high pressure sodium. The difference between the lamps was largest at lower irradiance levels. It decreased by rise in irradiation. The natural light conditions had a larger influence on plant growth by the use of high pressure sodium lamps than by the use of the other two light sources.
