ISHS Acta Horticulturae 127: IV Conference on recent Advances in Vegetable Virus Research

THE ELIMINATION OF SOME GLOBE ARTICHOKE VIRUSES BY SHOOT APEX CULTURE AND IN VITRO MICROPROPAGATION

Authors:   A. Peña-Iglesias, P. Ayuso
Abstract:
Spanish globe artichoke plants are chronically infected by two viruses (Peña-Iglesias, 1971) called ADV (artichoke degeneration virus) and ALV (artichoke latent virus). Both viruses have been partially characterised (Peña-Iglesias and Ayuso, 1972). On some occasions, we have also found a mixed infection with a rhabdovirus (Peña-Iglesias et al., 1972). The three above viruses have been reviewed by Martelli and Rana (1975). Some of the work involving the elimination of ADV and ALV by shoot apex culture has been briefly described in earlier abstracts (Peña-Iglesias & Ayuso, 1974; 1980). In this report, we give further information on these viruses and their elimination by tissue culture.
