Abstract:
Spanish garlic cultivars like other foreign cultivars are chronically infected by a potyvirus which we have partially characterised.
A possible carlavirus is sometimes found in mixed infections.
The inclusion bodies of the spanish potyvirus are similar to those described in California.
We believe that there are very few garlic varieties in the world (a possible cultivars synonymy is given) and very probably the potyvirus found in Spain is the same as that described in several countries.
The viruses are easily eliminated by shoot apex in vitro culture when the length of tip cultured is less than 0.3 mm.
We are developing techniques for the rapid in vivo or in vitro propagation of virus-free garlic clones.
