Abstract:
The fourth conference of the ISHS - Vegetable Virus Working Group was held at the National Vegetable Research Station, Wellesbourne, United Kingdom, from 13–15 September 1982. The meeting was entitled "Recent advances in vegetable virus research" and was attended by 38 participants from 18 countries.
During the formal sessions 29 invited and offered papers were presented on the following topics:
Session 1: Viruses of Allium (Chairman G.P. Martelli)
Session 2: Viruses of tomato and pepper (Chairman H. Lecoq)
Session 3: Virus problems in protected crops (Chairman S. Cohen)
Session 4: Breeding for virus resistance in vegetables (Chairman J.A. Tomlinson)
Session 5: Virus identification and epidemiology (Chairman L. Bos)
At least one invited paper was presented to introduce each session and these papers form the basis of this number of Acta Horticulturae.
Besides the formal papers, participants were able to see some of the local horticulture during a visit to the Agriculture Development and Advisory Services' experimental Horticulture station at Luddington and during a tour of the Vale of Evesham.
Following this excursion, a visit was made to several of the villages and small towns in the Cotswold region where aspects of local agriculture could be seen.
During the meeting Dr S Cohen from Bet Dagan, Israel and Dr M Conti from Turin, Italy started office respectively as Chairman and Secretary of the Group and Dr J.E. Duffus from Salinas, California and Dr H.J. Vetten from Braunschweig, Germany accepted nominations respectively as Vice-Chairman and Assistant Secretary.
As convener of this meeting, I would like to thank Professor J.K.A. Bleasdale, Director of the National Vegetable Research Station for allowing us the use of the Station's facilities throughout the conference and the various staff of NVRS, Plant Pathology Section who worked so hard to make the meeting a success.
