EFFECT OF ROOT TEMPERATURE ON NUTRIENT UPTAKE BY THE CHRYSANTHEMUM

Abstract:
Different cultivars of spray chrysanthemum have been grown in recirculating nutrient solution at 16, 20 and 24°C and the major elements N, K, Ca and Mg as well as the minor elements Fe, Mn and Zn in the plants have been determined three or four times during the growing period.

The content of nutrients in the plants varied according 1: to the uptake of inorganic elements and 2: to the formation of organic matter, especially carbohydrates. The first period after start of short-day treatment the uptake of some inorganic ions dominate until a maximum in concentration is reached. From then a formation of carbohydrates seems to prevail, resulting in a reduced concentration of some of the inorganic elements. Higher temperatures seem to increase formation of organic matter.
