ISHS Acta Horticulturae 126: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

EFFECTS OF PHYSICAL MEDIA PROPERTIES ON CODIAEUM VARIEGATUM ROOTING RESPONSE

Authors:   P. Lorenzo, M.I. Trillas, M.D. Sant, J.F. Aguilà
Abstract:
Rooting response of the cuttings from Codiaeum Variegatum were assayed on four different mixes, which were characterized according to their physical properties.

Media E (100% composted pine bark) showed the best rooting response and the other substrates, giving a good quality, do not differs among theirs. Rooted cuttings on pine bark present a big ramification which promote all statistical differences in the studied parameters (roots number, volume, total length, fresh weight, dry weight), this great adventitious root development can be attributed to an optimum intersection point of the air-water curve on pine bark in 8 cm high pots, giving a proper aireation and no excess of water.

It should be concluded that pine bark is a very suitable rooting media for Codiaeum variegatum cuttings.
