ISHS Acta Horticulturae 126: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SUBSTRATES AND PLANT DISEASES

Author:   J. Louvet
Abstract:
By growing plants on substrates on attempt is made to avoid soils infested with potentially dangerous plant pathogens. However, infection of the root system by micro-organisms is not completely prevented. Examples are given for tomatoes and ornamentals. The influence of several factors is also considered : infestation of the substrate by soil before or during crop growth, by air, by irrigation water or by lack of crop rotation. The importance of monitoring the phytosanitary state of the substrates is underlined as well as the need to consider their receptivity to diseases. Methods of disease control are discussed in relation to the special characteristics of growing crops on substrates.
