Abstract:
As a consequence of the increase of the pig population especially in West-Flanders, it is becoming more and more difficult to recycle the pig manure by traditional methods.
An alternative recycling method consists of separating the manure into a solid and a liquid fraction.
The solid substantion can, after addition of a certain quantity of bark, be stabilised by means of composting.
The chemical analysis shows that in this way a compost can be obtained with high potential fertilizer value.
The physical characteristics and a serie of growth experiments indicate that the compost can be successfully used as a substrate for the growth of ornamental plants.
