ISHS Acta Horticulturae 125: Symposium on Chrysanthemum

A TECHNIQUE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SPRAY CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN A HYDROPONICS SYSTEM ON RAISED BENCHES

Authors:   J.V. Morgan, A.T. Moustafa, N. Groome
Abstract:
A cultural system for the production of cut-flower chyrsanthemums on raised benches or supports is described. It is based on the concept of continuously recirculating nutrient solution through simple rigid plastic channels which provide better than 90% space utilisation. The cuttings are rooted directly in the channels and maintained at a density of 125 plants/m2 throughout the long-day phase. During the short-day flowering phase the channels are spaced to provide a density of 62 plants/m2. Results with the system to-date indicate a shortened cropping cycle, together with improved flower quality.

Compared with conventional ground-bed production the system has the potential to increase output by more than 50%. Calculations indicate that the initial installation costs, estimated at £60 000 per acre, may be recouped in two years. The many-fold advantages of the system are outlined.
