ISHS Acta Horticulturae 125: Symposium on Chrysanthemum

THE INFLUENCE OF DIFFERENT WATER SUPPLY UPON THE GROWTH OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS.

Authors:   R. Röber, M. Hafez
Abstract:
In an experiment with Chrysanthemum - Indicum - Hybrids (C. x hortorum L.H. Bailey) the influence of different substrates and moisture regimes on the growth and quality of the cut flowers was examined. The moistures have been regulated by tensio-switches or ceramic plugs. The vase life of the cut flowers was studied after pretreatment. The following results have been obtained:
  1. The yield of the shoots was smaller with decreasing moisture of the substrates. High moisture contents of the substrates resulted in high weights of flowers and shoots.
  2. Though highly stressed by drought the outer quality of the cut flowers and the length of the flower stems (≥80 cm) were still good enough for commercial purposes.
  3. The decrease in yield with falling moisture contents of the substrates was more pronounced with peat substrate (TKS 1) than with peat clay mixture (E - Erde P). The highest yield was reached with TKS 1 and high moisture contents.
  4. The number of buds and flowers was nearly independent of the treatments.
  5. The vase life of the leaves and flowers increased with decreasing moisture contents of the plant substrates.
