ISHS Acta Horticulturae 125: Symposium on Chrysanthemum

BIOLOGY AND CONTROL OF THE LEAF MINER LIRIOMYZA TRIFOLII (BURGESS) ON GLASSHOUSE CHRYSANTHEMUM

Authors:   M. van de Vrie, F.B. Dirkse
Abstract:
The production of glasshouse chrysanthemum is an important part of the ornamental industry in the Netherlands. Especially the year-round production in glasshouses is of considerable importance; with a total area of 490 ha and a production value of Dfl. 262.000.000 in 1980 the chrysanthemum production is the second crop after roses.

Until recently, pests have been of relatively minor importance; thrips, aphids (mainly Myzus persicae) and spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) had to be controlled regularly, but caused no major problems because effective pesticides were available. Only occasionally Myzus persicae strains were found to have developed resistance against organophosphorous compounds but suitable alternative aphicides were found.

During recent years the leaf miner Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess, 1880) was accidentally introduced into several glasshouses in the Netherlands. It became a serious pest in many glasshouses shortly after its introduction. Some reasons for reaching this pest status were that growers were unfamiliar with this type of damage, the rapid population development of this insect and the relative unsusceptibility of this species to many insecticides. The majority of the chrysanthemum flower production is exported to Germany, the Scandinavian countries, England and France. During 1980 a zero tolerance level for leaf miner symptoms on export produce was established. This increased the importance of this pest, because control has to be aimed to prevention of any sign of damage. Studies were undertaken on the bionomics, population development, importance of secondary host plants, dissiminations and chemical control.
