EARLY TREATMENT OF POTTED CHRYSANTHEMUMS WITH RETARDING SUBSTANCES |

| Abstract:
For a number of years the possible early treatment of vigorous growing potted ornamental plants with retardants has been investigated. The main reason for this is to exert especially effective and also cost saving influence on economically important varieties relatively early. The influence of the inhibitors on three stages are being investigated: treatment of the mother plants before taking cuttings, application before and during rooting of the cuttings and treatment during the young plant stage. Experiments with a vigorous growing variety of Chrysanthemum-Indicum-Hybrids (C. x hortorum L.H. Bailey) with application during the 2nd stage have yielded informative results. Rock wool blocks and Jiffy-7 used for the rooting of the cuttings were soaked in with retarding substances concentrated solutions. In comparison therewith half-rooted cuttings were sprayed with the same substances. After this the potted plants were grown until flowering without further treatments. Great differences between the used rooting blocks as well as between the used retarding substances were obvious. With rock wool as substratum retardants can be given only very low concentrated, otherwise there will be great losses. All together the results with rock wool were not satisfying. With Jiffy-7 only the effect of Alden (3 000 to 5 000 ppm) on the vegetative growth was as wanted, but there was a delay of flowering differently depending on season and influence of the weather situation.
