PRECOCITY OF SWISS BARTLETT PEARS ON CLONAL AND SEEDLING ROOTSTOCKS |

| Abstract:
Swiss Bartlett was evaluated on Old Home Farmingdale (OHF) clonal rootstocks OHF-34, 51, 69, 87, 130, 230 and 515, Angers and Provence Quince, and Old Home and Bartlett seedlings, planted in 1974 at 2.4 x 4.8 m (8' x 16'). All trees on OHF-51 were winter-killed and thus excluded from the evaluation. Single trees of all rootstocks remaining in the experiment were combined in blocks, and replicated twelve times. Cumulative marketable yields in lbs per tree from 1974 to 1980 inclusive indicate that OHF-87 was the most precociously productive rootstock, followed by OHF-34, 69 and 515. However, potential tree size as indicated by trunk cross-sectional area in cm2, was largest for OHF-34 and 515, followed by 87 and 69. When yields were divided by trunk area to give efficiency, Angers Quince slightly surpassed OHF-87, with Provence Quince ranking third, followed by Old Home seedling and OHF-34. Both quinces suffered some tree loss from winter injury at the crown. | |
