BREEDING RESISTANCE TO FIRE-BLIGHT BACTERIA, ERWINIA AMYLOVORA, IN PEARS

Author:   K. Ryugo
Abstract:
Elliot #4, a fire-blight tolerant item which originated on the Elliot Ranch located in the Sacramento River delta district by Dr. Harvey E. Thomas, was hybridized in 1964 with Bartlett (mother parent) and Vermont Beauty (pollen parent). The resulting seedlings were planted but not protected against the bacteria after the trees were established. Seasonal scoring of the seedlings for degree of infectivity revealed that those susceptible remained so while those tolerant maintained their relative rank, season after season. Progenies of Bartlett tended to be more susceptible than those of Vermont Beauty. Two outstanding hybrids from the latter cross have now been hybridized with Winter Nelis, as both pollen and mother parent, in an effort to spread the maturation season and increase the tolerance to the organism.
