Abstract:
Some cultivars and F1 hybrids of the local eggplant, Solanum gilo Raddi were evaluated for yield and other yield components at Ibadan and Ilora Crop Research Stations.
At Ibadan, all the hybrids except L4x9 had substantial yield increases varying from 28 to 90.9% with an average of 33.7% over their better parents.
At Ilora, the increases varied from 15.7 to 86.9% with an average of 23.7 percent.
At Ibadan, only hybrid L4x6 significantly outyielded all the cultivars and also its better parent by 90.9 percent.
This hybrid which also produces fruits of acceptable quality is recommended for commercial production.
Of all the yield components, the number of fruits per plant and, or weight per fruit are the most important for yield increases.
