Abstract:
A survey of the destructive and beneficial insects and mites associated with leaf and fruit vegetables in southwestern Nigeria is reported.
Twenty three species of vegetables including the genera Abelmoschus, Amaranthus, Basella, Capsicum, Celosia, Citrullus, Corchorus, Crassocephallum, Lactuca, Sesamum, Solanum, Talinum and Telfaria were surveyed.
A total of 155 species of insects, from 44 families and seven orders, were found to cause varying degrees of destruction on the vegetables.
Three injurious mites from two families of Acarina attacking the vegetables were also recorded.
Beneficial insects, namely predators, parasites and flower pollinators recorded in the study include 42 species from 15 families and six orders.
