ISHS Acta Horticulturae 123: VI African Symposium on Horticultural Crops

PRODUCTION CHARACTERISTICS OF FIVE PLANTAIN PROPAGULES

Authors:   J.C. Obiefuna, T.O.C. Ndubizu
Abstract:
Yields of the five propagules - peeper, early sword sucker, late sword sucker, bit and maiden were not affected by the depth of planting. Late sword sucker flowered very early about 16 months after planting, yielding the heaviest bunch weight per plant. The other propagules matured about 17 months after planting. Late sword sucker flowered about 18–21 months after planting while the peeper and bit ratoons flowered 27 – 30 months. Yield decline was most rapid in plantains raised from peeper and bit. The continued yield of the plantain in addition to favourable environmental and cultural factor, also depended on the propagule used for the orchard establishment.
