The genus Actinidia contains a diverse array of species, acting as a source of genetic variation for use in kiwifruit breeding.
The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Ltd. (PFR) holds an extensive collection of Actinidia species, including Actinidia arguta, amongst other relatives.
The ideotype for the species A. arguta is a small, edible-skinned, intensely flavoured kiwifruit containing high concentrations of phytochemicals that may positively affect human health.
Vitamin C is one of these phytochemicals that is relevant to consumers.
Here, we illustrate the distribution of this trait within PFR's populations of A. arguta, hybrids and interspecific hybrids.
