APRICOT SORTS AND HYBRIDS RESISTANT TO LOW TEMPERATURES

Abstract:
In valuable fruit-growing species, the apricot tree continues to remain - on a world and national scale - deficient as regards the fruit yield, especially as a result of the phenomenon of premature destruction and of the negative effect determined by late spring frosts. Both deficiencies can, however, be substantially limited by promoting an adequate variety and by adopting an intensive culture system.

In the desire of contributing to the improvement of the assortment and of the intensive cultivation technology of the apricot-tree, our staff have made researches within the experimental didactic station, the section of Tîmburesti, placed on the irrigated sand in southern Olteni. The experiments were placed on a slightly modelled soil, with the sand layer of 7–8 m, a low content of humus, 0.6–1.3% and of fertilizing substances : 0.05% N ; 4–6 mg at 100 g soil P2O5 ; 5–8 mg at 100 g soil K2O with a weak acid reaction pH = 6.5.

The climatic conditions in the zone and the years of experimenting were characterized by an average temperature of 10.3°C with an absolute maximum temperature of 38.5°C in July and a minimum one of -24.6°C in January 1980. The sum of the precipitations ranged between 431.7 mm and 530.2 mm annually, the degree of humidity being compensated by corrogation up to 70% of IUA.
