ISHS Acta Horticulturae 121: VII Symposium on Apricot Culture and Decline

A PROMISING APRICOT HYBRID FOR NORTHERN TRANSILVANIA

Author:   N. MINOIU
Abstract:
The apricot finds suitable ecological conditions in some restricted areas of S. R. Romania. Nevertheless, it is grown in 17 counties ensuring a yearly total yield of 40 thousands tones.

In our country the apricot culture is limited because of its requirements to air temperature. The well known apricot varieties are thermophyl having a low resistance to winter frosts.

As a result of the breeding program (1950–1980) some valuable apricot varieties and hybrids with an increased hardiness, suitable for forest steppe conditions were developed and released into production (Cociu, 1977).

Our investigations have had in view to obtain some apricot hybrids with high constant yields suitable for Northern Transilvania ecological conditions (with long frosty winters and plentiful rainfalls during the growing season) taking into account that the apricot is not grown yet in this area of the country.
