ISHS Acta Horticulturae 121: VII Symposium on Apricot Culture and Decline

EFFICIENCY OF APRICOT PRODUCTION IN THE NORTHERN CAUCASUS

Author:   I.A. DRAGAVTSEVA
Abstract:
The Northern Caucasus is a main region of commercial horticulture of the Russian Federative Republic. It is a Northern border of apricot production in the USSR.

The main problem of effective apricot production is a selection of varieties ecologically adapted to different climatic conditions of the Northern Caucasus.

Sharp change of temperature in the most zones in January and February when frosts after thaws cause flower bud death is the main limiting factor.

Two directions in increasing efficiency of apricot production are used:

  • choice zones ecologically suitable for apricot production;
  • breeding new varieties with rhythmic development suitable to variable conditions of environment.
