Peach is a woody perennial species that requires a bud dormancy process, which allows adaptation of the plant to its environmental conditions by coordinating growth to the appropriate annual periods.
Peach buds release their growth after the accumulation of a certain amount of chilling, which is specific for each cultivar.
Failure to fulfil these requirements due to warm winters leads to irregular bud break and reduced yields.
Phytohormones are chemical messengers that connect environmental changes and plant responses.
In this study the correlation between flower bud burst and the dynamic change of endogenous hormones is analyzed in two cultivars, 'Okinawa' and 'Pepita', with different chilling requirements.
The objective was to correlate bud growth regulators profiles during dormancy with chilling accumulation, morphological status and flowering dates.
Samples of flower buds collected weekly during winter (from middle November to January) were analysed.
Differences in starch contents, weight, growth regulators (ABA, GAs) and histological analyses of the organogenesis process were performed.
