ISHS Acta Horticulturae 120: Symposium on Growth Regulators in Fruit Production

EFFECT OF CHLORMEQUAT ON THE ANATOMICAL STRUCTURE OF THE PEAR STEM AND ON THE ACCUMULATION OF NUTRIENTS

Author:   F. Jaumien
Abstract:
The pattern of tissue differentiation in shoots whose growth has been inhibited by chlormequat differs from that in vigorously growing shoots. After the end of elongation growth there is an expansion of the cortex and suppressed development of secondary xylem in the sub-apical parts of chlormequat-inhibited shoots, leading to an increased contribution of parenchymatous tissue to the stem. Accumulation of carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds occurs earlier in the terminal shoots of trees treated with chlormequat, and in spurs, than in the terminal shoots of control trees.
