TRANSPIRATION AS INDICATOR OF SUCCESSFUL APRICOT BREEDING

Abstract:
In ecology and agronomical practice, it appears most important in which way water becomes absorbed by plants and what water economy does represent. The water balance of plants is important both from the economical and biological standpoints /Solowiewa 1964/. Especially for shallow-rooted species, as well as for apricot trees, the water level plays an important role. Hendricks /1911/ and Kostina /1936/ classify the majority of species of the Prunus genus as hydrophilic ones. Alas, this fact is often forgotten in the practice. Plums as hydrophytes react intensively to soil water deficiency or to changes in the conditions increasing the water loss from the plant.

In wilting type diseases likewise primary disturbance of the water movement occurs. It is known that the water balance process in healthy as well as in diseased apricot trees was insufficiently investigated.

In this work, our aim was to find out the rate and way of water losses from various plum species and apricot varieties by means of the individual parts of transpiration. Since the examined material from various regions of Slovakia and Moravia is concentrated in Bratislava, we suppose that we may characterize this material and its adaptability to certain ecological environments.
