'Deyangshi', also called red-wild hair persimmon, a dioecious, deciduous and perennial tree, is mainly distributed in the 500-600 m altitude range in the northeast part of Sichuan Province, China, and has been introduced into the National Field Genbank for persimmon of China.
Its morphological characters are remarkably different from other species or varieties.
Its male and female plants have masses of flowers with pink-red color, which axillary single birth female flower, and an inflorescence consists of 3-5 male florets.
It can be used as a rootstock or ornamental tree.
Its chromosome numbers were observed and it was found that Deyangshi was determined to be tetraploid from chromosome counts, but differs from D. rhombifolia which is tetraploid but has shoots with thorns.
Pollen morphology of 'Deyangshi' and seven other species were examined using scanning electron microscopy and the pollen is significantly different from other species.
Molecular markers were used to distinguish 'Deyangshi' from other Diospyros species and were used to compare its taxonomic status with Diospyros L. (Ebenaceae). The results of molecular marker (SRAP) cluster analysis also suggested that 'Deyangshi' and the other Diospyros species are genetically distinct.
Therefore, we propose that 'Deyangshi' does not belong to any existing species and might be a new species of Diospyros L.
