ISHS Acta Horticulturae 119: III International Symposium on Water supply and Irrigation in the open and under Protected Cultivation

EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ON ROOT FUNCTIONING

Author:   R. Brouwer
Abstract:
The growth of the root system required carbohydrates which otherwise might be used for the growth of plant parts that take part in dry matter production. The efforts made to maximise productivity have resulted in treatments which tend to reduce the size of root system.

The discussion concentrates on the feed back mechanisms between shoots and roots in order to predict how environmental conditions might set bound to further progress in this direction.
