Abstract:
The glasshouse industry in the Western part of the Netherlands depends heavily on the surface water for irrigation of the crops.
The high salt content of this water more and more becomes a problem with intensification of the cultures.
So growers try to improve the water quality.
On a number of nurseries rainwater of the greenhouses is collected.
However this method requires a catchment basin of about 2000 m3 per ha.
On many nurseries is no place for such a basin.
So a number of them makes use of desalination of water by reverse osmosis.
At the Research Station of Naaldwijk such a system is in operation, which have a capacity of 4 m3 per hour.
Important issues in operation of a reverse osmosis plant are the pretreatment of the row water and the membrane device.
The pretreatment of the row water is necessary to prevent fouling of the membranes.
At the moment three types of membranes are in operation in the Netherlands: the hollow fibre, the sprial wound and the tubular membranes.
Between this types there is a clear difference in sensitivity to membrane fouling.
