INFLUENCE OF SOIL WATER POTENTIAL DURING DIFFERENT GROWTH PERIODS ON YIELD OF CAULIFLOWER

Author:   H.-J. Wiebe
Abstract:
In growth chambers the effect of soil water potential (-0,06, -0,3 and -1,0 bar) at different growth periods (1. leaf initiation, 2. head initiation and 3. head growth) was tested.

The highest yield was found in constant -0,06 bar. Compared with that, the fresh weights of total plants or heads in -110 bar were 16% only.

Low soil moisture at period 1 retarded head growth but hardly reduced the marketable head size.

By waterstress it is possible to retard the growth of small young transplants without a higher risk for bottoning.

High yield of cauliflower depends mainly on high soil moisture at period 3, that means during the period of the highest water consumption. Increasing soil moisture promotes head growth and retards quality decline.
