EFFECT OF SOIL CONDITIONERS ON PLANTGROWTH AND WATER USE EFFICIENCY (A GREEN HOUSE EXPERIMENT)

Authors:   M.Y. Tayel, F.M. Abed, O.A. El-Hady
Abstract:
The effect of bitumenous emulsion (0.0 – 1.5%), PVAc (0.0 – 1.0%) and PAM (0.0 – 0.2%) on barley growth and water use efficiency using sandy, sandy loam and calcareous soils was studied. Distilled water was periodically added to the pots to raise their moisture content to 60% of the soil water holding capacity each two days.

The three conditioners significantly increased the dry matter production within 6 weeks in the case of sandy loam and calcareous soils. The conditioners exerted a beneficial effect on water use efficiency by barley plants grown in the three soils. This effect increased with concentration. PAM was superior compared to bitumenous emulsion and PVAc.
