Regeneration of grapevine virus-free plants by in vitro chemotherapy

Abstract:
Chemical drugs used in human medicine are shown to be effective for treating grapevine virus infections. This is demonstrated under controlled conditions on in vitro cultures. Virus-infected grapevine cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) were grown for 30-40 days on agarized media supplemented with with 60 mg L-1 ribavirin and 120 mg L-1 oseltamivir viricides, used both individually and in admixture. Regenerated plantlets were indexed by DAS-ELISA. Grapevine fanleaf virus could not be removed from 'Valerien' Grapevine leafroll associated virus 1-free plants 'Frāncuşă 15 Od.' were regenerated at a rate of 26 and 4% after exposure to ribavirin and combined viricides, respectively. The treatment with combined viricides was effective and complete elimination of Grapevine fleck virus infection was observed.
