ISHS Acta Horticulturae 118: Working-party on Greenhouse Cucumber

CULTIVATION OF GREENHOUSE CUCUMBER IN SWEDEN

Authors:   L. Ottosson, T. Hansson
Abstract:
Horticulture is a small industry in Sweden. About 55 ha yielding 30 kg/m2 will make Sweden 50 % selfsufficient of cucumber.

Experiments on soil substrates have been dealing with peat and mineral wool and resulted in recommendations on compositions of nutrient solutions, watering frequency and sizes of mats.

Greenhouse climate studies have given good results with a low-energy house compared to a reference glasshouse. Only 50 % of the oil consumption compared with reference house is used and still there is a higher yield in the low-energy house. This house has a closed system which allows a high CO2-level because of no ventilation.

In a leyering experiment the plant density of 3 pl/m2 has given higher yield than 2 and 2,5 pl/m2. Leyering has compared with "umbrella-method" given 20 % higher yield.

Leyering system of trimming needs more studies to give knowledge on the economy of the method.
