| Abstract:
Of a December/January planted cucumber crop, grown under three night temperatures, structural elements of the main stem were registered, such as number of axils, flowers and fruits, number of axils without, with one and with more fruit, etc. The dependence of the data on night temperature and on planting date are presented and discussed. Development of some of the above features with axil position along the stem can be concluded to depend not only on circumstances, but also on some endogenous regulatory principle, which principle seems to be highly insensitive to light conditions and also to night temperature. Relatively strong abortion of fruit, for instance, is found for the fifth fruit allowed to develop, irrespective of environmental conditions as applied. Fruit growth durations to harvest size indicate two types of fruit development. Slow fruit development takes place primarily in axils just below abortive ones. | |
