Abstract:
Arracacha is an important root crop throughout Latin America.
It is known to deteriorate quickly after harvest with consequent high market wastages.
This was found to be caused mainly by fungal and bacterial rots and desiccation.
Washing roots, which is practiced for certain markets, increased rotting; the addition of chlorine to the washing water did not reduce rotting levels.
Dipping roots after harvest in benomyl with or without maneb reduced but did not eradicate rotting.
Individually wrapping roots in plastic cling or shrink films reduced rotting and desiccation and could be used commercially for marketing.
