Abstract:
Since the period of melon consumption provided by field cultures is quite limited (about 2 to 3 months) i.e.
July-September, during which period the majority of the varieties reach their maturity, it appeared to be necessary to study various possibilities of how to prolong consuming duration also within the period autumn-winter, by storing some resistant late varieties.
The encouraging results obtained by Niculescu and Kasmire (1979) in testing the storage resistance at various temperature levels of the Casaba melon variety, have determined that research could be extended to some other late varieties of the winter melon.
At the same time, data supplied by Ryall and Lipton (1972) regarding sensitivity to cold of several varieties at different maturity stages, and the recommendation of Hvatkin et al., (1972) concerning long-term storage at low temperatures (0°C) of melons, led to some investigations (in 1979) aimed at testing melon behaviour at 0°C too.
