ISHS Acta Horticulturae 116: Symposium on Postharvest Handling of Vegetables

STORAGE PERFORMANCE OF VEGETABLES AFTER MECHANICAL HARVESTING AND COMMODITY PROCESSING

Authors:   N.S. Goncharuk, V.S. Dyachenko
Abstract:
The methods of storage of mechanically harvested vegetables may be different for various kinds of products. But as our investigations show the general principle must be the desire to bring the processing of mechanically harvested crops to a minimum before loading for storage in order to avoid additional pre-storage mechanical injuries.

In some cases it can be optimal to store a heap of machine-harvested crops. Mechanized commodity processing of a heap of crops and bringing the marketable quality of the product to standard requirements are carried out in this case after storage directly before realization.

The storage of machine-harvested carrots in a heap finds use in production. This allows to reduce labour costs during harvesting and to keep the crops on the level of manual harvesting.
