ISHS Acta Horticulturae 116: Symposium on Postharvest Handling of Vegetables

THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT FACTORS ON THE SUITABILITY OF CARROTS FOR PREPACKING IN PE BAGS AND THEIR STORAGE

Author:   L. Umiecka
Abstract:
The storage of carrots in clamps is commonly used in Poland. This makes it very difficult to supply the shops systematicly during the winter. In the spring however, the keeping quality decreases very rapidly and already after a short time the carrots are unsuitable for consumption.

Complex experiments were carried out on influence of variety, plant density, sowing and harvesting date on the suitability, and also the keeping quality of carrots for prepacking in different means of PE bags and storing conditions.

In favourable conditions even such varieties as "Nantes" and "Amsterdamse Bak" with equal storage ability, were kept during 8–9 months until the end of May. The carrots from three sowing dates (15 May and 1 and 15 June), harvested from 1 September to the end of October in fortnight intervals had a good quality, particularly if they were harvested between 15 September and 15 October.

The best keeping and market quality for the longest period of time (8–9 months) were observed when carrots had been washed in clean water, topped and tail end removed immediately after harvest; then they were placed in perforated PE bags or in crates lined with PE film without drying in storage conditions of 0 - +1°C. For short periods of time (3–4 weeks) carrots could be stored with good results at +4-+5°C in unperforated PE bags.
