Abstract:
Total peroxidase activity in RIN tomato (mutant, non-climacteric) picked green, was similar to that when picked yellow.
Total peroxidase activity in Moneymaker decreased successively when picked at the preclimacteric, climacteric and postclimacteric stages.
In the F1 hybrid, peroxidase activity decreased slightly at the climacteric and postclimacteric stages.
The high peroxidase activity of the F1 tomato at the climacteric and postclimacteric stages must be a trait introduced by the RIN mutant.
This would be one of the few trait where RIN is dominant over Moneymaker (classical cultivar).
The high activity of peroxidase at climacteric and postclimacteric stages could constitute a useful criterion for the geneticist to produce cultivars with better storage characteristics than the classical ones.
