THE USE IN GREENHOUSES OF HOT WATER RESULTING FROM ELECTRIC POWER GENERATION |

| Abstract:
In the Netherlands virtually no use is made of hot water resulting from electric power generation for the heating of greenhouses. On account of energy prices, building density and the complexity of our horticulture under glass it is not possible to effect drastic measures at short notice; besides the power station lie far from the centres of our horticulture under glass. Various plans are being elaborated for heating at distance. One of these is discussed. It concerns a new glasshouse centre to be established near Almere, a town currently being built in the most recently created polder Zuidelijk Flevoland, to the East of Amsterdam. There is sufficient land for 300 ha glasshouse area, which can be connected to an auxiliary power station being constructed for the heating of Almere's houses. First of all we examined whether Almere was a suitable site for a new horticultural centre for the flower nurseries which have to leave Aalsmeer as a result of the renovation plans in our old flower centre there. In view of the good road connections, a good water-supply and the proximity of workers this study has yielded posititive results. The second part of the study concerns the economic and technical possibilities. The alternative we have chosen is expansion of the auxiliary power station for generation of electricity and provision of hot water of 60% of the capacity of the heating installations in the greenhouses. Transport distance to the area is 7 km. At the edge of the area a central boiler house will be constructed for the initial period and for additional, heating to 100% capacity.
