ISHS Acta Horticulturae 115: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

PREPARATORY EXPERIMENTS ON SEASONAL STORAGE OF HEAT

Author:   M. Areskoug
Abstract:
This study concerns experimental and theoretical investigation of an earth heat accumulator, 12 × 25 × 5 m3, directly beneath an experimental greenhouse. The heat accumulator has been loaded by excess solar heat from the greenhouse, using heat pumps, during two summer months. The soil temperatures reached 40–45°C. Using a theoretical model for heat flow, the heat balance in the accumulator and its interaction with surrounding soil and greenhouse has been studied. Due to the small size of the accumulator, the heat losses to surrounding soil and up through the soil surface are large. To diminish the relative losses an accumulator has to be as large as possible.
