ISHS Acta Horticulturae 115: Symposium on More Profitable Use of Energy in Protected Cultivation

PASSIVE SOLAR HEATING APPLIED TO COMMERCIAL GREENHOUSES

Authors:   L.D. Albright, R.W. Langhans, G.B. White
Abstract:
This report describes a passive solar greenhouse heating system which is designed for commercial conditions. The system is centered on a highly insulated thermal curtain which reduces night heat loss by at least 80 percent and is economically attractive at today's energy costs. Photocell control of the curtain is deemed to be best.

Greenhouses have little intrinsic thermal mass; two features are added to enhance the passive heating effect. The first is to augment the thermal mass. The second is sliding night temperature to increase the diurnal temperature cycle.
