EXTRACT HEAT FOR A HORTICULTURAL PROJECT AT LANESBOROUGH

Abstract:
Since the oil crisis in 1974, special interest has arisen on ways of using heat from generating stations to supply energy needs. A greenhouse complex is under development adjacent to a peat-fired generating station in the Irish midlands from which heat is extracted to supply the complex. An appropriate commercial and organisational framework is a prerequisite for the economic operation of such a scheme. The technical aspects of the scheme have also to be carefully assessed in order to establish a method of supplying heat which will not only be technically possible but will also conserve energy and be commercially viable. Heat flow is controlled to meet user's needs within the supply constraints of the generating station. The heat is distributed by means of an insulated pre-fabricated pipe-in-pipe system buried in the ground. Successful experience with Lanesborough could lead to the development of other schemes of this nature in Ireland which will not only conserve energy but will also benefit the Horticulture Industry in a time of growing energy shortage.
