HEAT CONSUMPTION MODEL FOR GREENHOUSE NURSERIES

Authors:   Jan S. Strøm, Marius G. Amsen
Abstract:
Advisory services and growers often want a characteristic figure, computed from easily available data, revealing the heat economy of a particular greenhouse nursery. Based on the assumption that the heat consumption of a nursery may be modelled as a linear function of the outdoor temperature, it is proposed that the slope of the heat consumption line is taken as the characteristic figure provided the coefficient of determination indicates a satisfactory linear fit.

This heat consumption model was applied to the 1979 oil consumption data for eight greenhouse nurseries. The model worked very well for nurseries operating near constant indoor temperatures in which cases the results were surprisingly good. For nurseries operating at considerably different temperature levels, data on the indoor temperature strategies were necessary in order to achieve satisfactory results. Regular data sampling intervals of 4 weeks gave the best linear fit.
